Run Victoria Marathon on 9th of October 2011. Vlad ran 8K, I ran half-marathon.

Vlad did his best time and was 3rd in his age category and 140th overall (out of 2435) with time 35:25.

My time was 1:41:07 - 61st in my age category and 503rd overall (out of 5145).

While on Kauai, I ran half-marathon race. It was a difficult course with 200m elevation gain over first 13K.

My second TC10K run and first run for Vlad. I came at 46:13 and Vlad at 50:00 - awesome results for first 10k!

TC10K is second largest 10K run in Canada - ~12000+ runners.

My goal was 45:00... Will try again next year.

My next run is Oak Bay Half Marathon on May 15.

On sunny weekend of July 18-19, 2009 group of eight summit Triple Peak (30 km north of Ucluelet). It was awesome trip with breathtaking views. Some heavy bushwacking and two bee nests happened there before we get to base camp at lower lake. We summit (1557 m) around 5 pm on July 18.

On Day 2 we took steep gully trail to upper lake and climbed unnamed peak of 1305 m between Triple Peak and Cat Ears.

This Saturday I went to hiking trip to Mount Whimper - highest Canadian mountain south of 49th parallel - with Alpine Club of Canada (Vancouver Island section). Sandy Briggs was the trip leader. I attached route recorded with my GPS (blue section is the hiking route, and magenta is logging road leading to the trailhead - 4WD with high clearance is a must have for logging road).

It was light rain, however we completed round trip (~9 km) in 4 hours. Elevation gain was ~850 m to the summit (1541 m).

I posted this route in Google Maps (My Maps section).

Let me know, if you need track logs for this trip.

There are two famous regional bike trails in Victoria - Lochside Trail, and Galloping Goose Trail. I did Lochside Trail couple of times before (I haven't done Galloping Goose trail yet). This time, I did Saanich Peninsula tour: I started Lochside trail up to Shwartz Bay ferry terminal, then turned to Lands End road up to the Moses Point, than Challet Road, Birch Road to West Saanich Road. From West Saanich Road I switch to Interurban Rail Trail (part of Centennial Trail System) before joining Galloping Goose. My bike speedometer measured 89 Km (uploaded GPS track is 86.5 km) - getting ready for Galloping Goose Round Trip...

This was a nice bike ride: fall colours, ocean views... With some small stops it took close to 4 hours and 30 minutes. Be careful at West Saanich Road - some parts are not bike-friendly - you have to share road with cars or pedestrians.

Whale at Botanical Beach

It was a lucky trip to Botanical Beach: Beautiful weather and ... Whale! My very first whale!
It was my fourth visit there (trip #1, trip #2, trip #3), but the only a first time a saw a gray whale there. Whale was feeding there, constantly diving and making fountains and splashes. Whale was kind enough to show almost full tail :). I am going to return in the middle of November when whales are coming back to California from Alaska.

This is a map of our road trip that we did on August 16-24, 2008. Three hotels (Port Hardy before and Prince Rupert after ferry, and Whistler), five camping nights at Miracle Beach, Lakesle Lake, Tyhee Lake, Ten Mile Lake, and Lac La Hache Provincial Parks. On the mainland we had no single night without rain, but it was a wonderful trip to remember and to recommend. Truly, a BC Experience!

I wish we had two more days, to split driving from Telkwa to Ten Mile Lake and from Lac La Hache to Whistler.

If you have three-four-five-six :) more days and wish to get more Northern Exposure, it worth taking slightly different route after Terrace:

These pictures were taken along Port Renfrew - Lake Cowichan road. This road is use to be mostly gravel, however, it is almost all asphalt now (in February 2008 it had only 2 km of gravel in the middle of 54 km road).

I took this road as part of short road trip: Victoria - Port Renfrew - Lake Cowichan - Victoria (see map below). It is a good one-day road trip to show diversity of landscapes of Vancouver Island close to Victoria.

Yesterday we went to Botanical Beach. This place is just 120 km from Victoria (close to Port Renfrew).
We caught lowest tidal point of that day (see Fisheries and Oceans Canada web-site to check tides) and were able to see pools with marine life. Unfortunately, we didn't see any starfish there (probably - not right season for them?)

Вчера был очень приятный солнечный день, и я решил повторить панораму, которую делал летом. В этот раз я:
а) Использовал 17-40 (на 40 мм)
б) в портретной ориентации
в) сделал 13 снимков
г) сшивал PTGUI (trial version).

Вот что из этого получилось (0.7 Мб файл):

Во-первых, портретная ориентация - это просто здорово, но чтобы получить еще больше неба и берег реки нужен второй проход!
Во-вторых, фокусное расстояние 40 мм позволяет минимизировать искажения!
В-третьих, PTGUI гораздо лучше сшивает - мест склейки не возможно обнаружить - чем PhotoStitch, которым я пользовался до этого.

Вот здесь начинаются валуны, которые закрывают северный берег озера от ветров (из-за этого вода в озере не перемешивается и лежит слоями. Глубже 13 метров начинается слой воды, где совсем нет кислорода. И в таком состоянии озеро находится уже 10 тысяч лет). Позже я подойду к ним ближе.

Затем я объехал озеро и вышел на специальную тропинку. Как я уже писал, длина этой тропинки 2.4 км. Вдоль тропинки расставлены специальные таблички, рассказывающие об интересные факты об озере и его историю.

Это вид на западную часть озера, где оно сильно сужается и глубина падает (там примерно по пояс и лежат упавшие деревья).

Обзорная площадка (Lookout). С этой точки хорошо видна только самая северная точка озера (если посмотреть на карту и провести линию от ответвления дороги до клинообразного залива в верхней части озера).

Я давно собирался попасть на Pink Lake с фотоаппаратом, и вот, наконец, 28 сентября выдалась такая возможность. Как раз был хороший солнечный день. Я заодно решил испытать Circular Polirizer (фильтр для объектива) - так что на фотографиях с облаками (как эта) видна работа этого фильтра.

Pink Lake расположено в начале Gatineau Park'а. От моего дома примерно 15 минут на велосипеде до начала парка. Путь по парку занял у меня 45 минут по дороге. Если бы я поехал по велосипедным путям, то у меня ушло бы часа потора-два - там постоянные спуски и подъемы и натуральные тропинки (специально для горных велосипедов).

Эта фотография сделана со специальной обзороной площадки на южном берегу озера. Я здесь долго не задержался - хотелось спуститься ближе к озеру и обойти его по специальной тропинке - там всего 2,4 км - озеро не очень то и большое.

Во время велосипедной прогулки вдоль Rideau Canal, мы присели отдохнуть под яблонями на берегу Dows Lake. Оксана пошла с камерой сделать несколько снимков гроздьев райских яблочек, и увидела вот эту чайку. Рыба была тяжелой для чайки, и чайка решила отобедать прямо на берегу.
